Day 13

When I woke up Goltis was not in his bunk. I jokingly asked "Is Goltis still alive?" and Anatoli replied: "Yes, there he lies in his bunk, can't you see him?" Today Goltis is looking like an old man. I have seen the way that he moves around in the old age home and I have smelt his breath before in the cancer unit. He has made himself appear at least 30 years older in the last two weeks. Except for his eyes. You can easily mistake him for a much older man if you do not look into his eyes. During the daily check up we had a discussion on what is behind his drive to continue in his dry fast. He says that at this stage prayer is keeping him sane. He wants to drink the ocean. I can feel his bones as he sits next to me. Barely two weeks ago I remember his impressive muscles move next to me as he leaned over to pass the salt on the table. How this man has faded away in front of my eyes. He still persists in his own way and brushes my fears for his health aside. He states that he has to go through this acidic crises and then he can start drinking. He says that when this crises is over his breath with stop to smelling like acetone. I am just concerned that his breath will stop smelling because he is not breathing anymore...
